Organization spotlight: The Alzheimer’s Association

When I was given the opportunity to choose a donation for our 20th anniversary, many different charities and causes flooded my mind. There’s one, however, that stood out due to a personal connection. A few years ago, a family member passed away from Alzheimer’s. His life ended too short due to the early onset of this terrible disease. The father, grandfather, brother, and father-in-law we once knew, slowly slipped away from us over several years time.

First it was simple forgetfulness and inability to do things he once loved, until he no longer knew who we were, how to dress, how to eat, how to speak. It was a heartbreaking thing to watch a loved one fade away so soon. The 60s and 70s should be the “golden years.” A time to revel in life lived, watch grandchildren grow, explore hobbies, spend time with family, and travel the world. Due to Alzheimer’s disease, this was not true for him. It is my hope that the Alzheimer’s Association can someday find a cure for this terrible disease.

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research. It is their mission to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through research, care, support and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. With them leading the way, I believe there could be “A world without Alzheimer’s.”
