hash·tag

/ˈhaSHtaɡ/: A word or phrase preceded by a hash or pound sign (#) and used to identify messages on specific topics.

– Merriam Webster

What was once associated with a telephone button, has ultimately transformed the way we communicate, categorize, and comprehend social media.

Not an avid social media user? Think of hashtags as keywords, allowing you to categorize posts on various social platforms.

Initially only used on Twitter, hashtags have spread to Facebook, Google+, Instagram, and Google search. As for LinkedIn, they attempted hashtags for a short — and unsuccessful time.

Unfortunately, many users on social media use and abuse the power of the hashtag. And while it can be annoying and unnecessary, remember that when you use hashtags your posts become searchable beyond your immediate followers. Placing your content in front of a much larger audience, connecting your brand to related topics, conversations, and potentially customers.

…But always remember, there is such a thing as TOO MUCH hashtagging.

Tweets with hashtags receive 2x more engagement, compared to those without.

Tweets with one or two hashtags have a 21% higher engagement than those with 3 or more.

And lastly — Tweets with more than two hashtags drop 17% in engagement.

**Cue responsible hashtagging**

Herein lies the sweet spot of hashtagging, the secret sauce of social media success, the golden rule of responsible hashtagging!

When posting to social media, use 1-2 hashtags per post.

Do not oversaturate your audience!

And when in doubt turn to the pros to show you what NOT to do.
