Got water? Step away from the plastic. #CreativeSummer14

We’ve all heard about how harmful plastic water bottles are to the environment. A few facts to make you cringe:

  • U.S. landfills are overflowing with 2 million tons of discarded water bottles alone.
  • Bottles used to package water take over 1,000 years to bio-degrade and if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes. It is estimated that over 80% of all single-use water bottles used in the U.S. simply become “litter.”
  • Recycling is only feasible in limited circumstances because only PET bottles can be recycled. All other bottles are discarded. Only 1 out of 5 bottles are sent to the recycle bin.

Not so good.

Which brings us to Michigan-based company, “Boxed Water is Better,” who created a cool and more sustainable solution: boxed water. Wha?

Boxed Water is Better describes themselves as, “Part sustainable water company, part art project, part philanthropic project, and completely curious.”

What they found is boxed water IS actually better. 76% of their box is from trees (renewable resource); more efficient shipping methods; the boxes are recycleable; and the trees used to make the boxes come from certified, well managed forests. Boxed Water is Better also partners with environmental group, “1% For The Planet.”

Sounds like a great alternative. And the packaging is classic, fun, and they’ve received plenty of press for it. The question is, would you drink from a box of water?
