The Mickey Mouse Formula

I suppose my formula might be: dream, diversify, and never miss an angle.” – Walt Disney

Creativity is a nebulous concept. You can’t touch or feel it, and it’s almost impossible to define or capture it—or to define your individual creativity.

That’s part of the deal: everyone has different ways of expressing creativity. Some people coax beautiful music from their instrument of choice. Others see the art hidden in a blank canvas, and reveal it to the world. And some spin a vivid tapestry of language from the loom of their imagination.

The way in which we express creativity is as unique and individual as the number of hairs on your head or the swirls of your fingerprint.

Walt Disney is undoubtedly one of the most creative minds of the 20th century. He created characters that have remained relevant for almost a hundred years now. Not to mention, seeding a business that would become one of the preeminent entertainment icons in the world. From cartoons to theme park rides to feature films, he did it all.

For Disney, the three components of creativity were dreaming, diversification, and never missing an angle. His advice was to never constrain your imagination, embrace every opportunity, and remain proactive.

This advice still rings true today. Like characters in a film, the most indispensable nuggets of wisdom are those that endure.
